The city gears up to be painted pink in September as part of Cancer Research’s ‘Paint Cambridge Pink’ event on the 17 – 19th September which will launch the charity’s ‘Join the fight for women’s survival’ campaign. Cancer Research UK has a free fundraising pack and is encouraging all to get involved in Cambridge and back this vital campaign to raise awareness and also funds for the charity. Local businesses and people in the area will be handed leaflets containing information about the disease and the work of Cancer Research UK in battling this cancer. The fundraising pack will give ideas on how supporters can get involved and raise money including a Pink Day which is due to be held on September 17th and staff in all kinds of work places can pay a pound to wear pink at work that day. Other ideas include raffles and quizzes as well as a host of events.

Cancer Research UK is looking for volunteers to help facilitate their planned events around the city that weekend. There will be a wealth of events in the city taking place in the streets, on a Pink Bus, donated by Stagecoach and in locations such as Lion Yard and The Grafton Centre. Nationally, a host of celebrities have backed the ‘Join the fight for women’s survival’ campaign including TV actresses Fay Ripley and Honor Blackman and film stars, Minnie Driver and Nicole Kidman.

Consumers in Cambridge will be seeing a change in their local Lakeland store as the kitchenware retailer looks to overhaul its window displays across the country. The retailer is looking to reinvigorate their window displays and point of sale display materials along the themes of ‘home baking’ and ‘grow your own’, which are felt to reflect the current trends in these difficult times.

Lakeland is working with the agency, Gratterpalm, to develop their new point of sale and window display materials. The overall theme is to reflect the British summertime using pastel and citrus colours and cardboard cut-outs of season produce, cupcake cases and images of scrapbooks in rustic, homely styles. This will be backed up with a commitment to value in the window displays with strap lines such as ‘save money – make your own’ and ‘great value’ window sticker displays. The ‘grow your own’ creative will be reflected in a series of Polaroid pictures that will be displayed showing images of a ‘green salad’.

Lakeland wants to use the window displays to appeal to their current loyal consumer base but also attract a younger audience. In the recession, it was felt that they wanted to reflect that ‘staying in’ is the new ‘going out’ and capitalise on consumer trends to grow/bake their own. Lakeland recognises the importance of their window display and point of sale materials in driving sales and reflecting their brand. Other retailers looking for pos printing in Cambridge should be able to source printers locally who can help them reinvigorate their store appearance as well.

Tomatoes have been given a boost after some flyer printing in Cambridge by Greenery UK meant that recipe leaflets were distributed to tomato lovers with fresh ideas on how to encourage them to use tomatoes in their cooking.

Greenery UK is a fruit and vegetable supplier that celebrated British Tomato Week by distributing sustainably grown tomatoes produced by one of their company’s own tomato growers. Along with Cornerways Nursery, a Norfolk based tomato growing company, Greenery UK went to Sainsbury’s supermarkets in Cambridge and Norwich, and also to Tesco’s head office, in order to promote their eco friendly home grown tomatoes. Cornerways Nursery is known for using no fuel for heat as all heat and power is provided by a system from an adjacent sugar processing plant, therefore reusing heat and being more eco friendly.

Greenery UK is a big supplier of our supermarkets for salads and fresh vegetables and is also the largest supplier of home-grown UK tomatoes. British Tomato Week aims to raise awareness about sustainably grown produce here in Britain. A variety of tomatoes were on offer for people to taste and cooking and storage tips were given by growers from Cornerways Nursery at the supermarkets, alongside the recipe leaflets that were distributed to tomato lovers.

Flyers or leaflets are a great marketing tool for reaching a lot of people and are a low cost, highly effective form of communication. By giving the audience something they can use – like a voucher, a coupon or in this case a recipe, it engages potential customers and encourages spend.

This summer in Cambridge will see two giant 48 sheet billboards displaying the new branding of local independent estate agent TuckerGardner. The estate agents, to mark their 21 years in sales and letting and to reposition themselves and their brand in the marketplace, had tasked Cambridge based Mobas to create a campaign to evolve their brand identity for the present day. This will culminate in the unveiling of posters on two of Cambridge’s most prominent billboards around the city. Mobas is a creative design, digital and brand agency solving design and communication issues for businesses in Cambridge.

The brand evolution developed by Mobas is to incorporate all elements of the marketing mix from the creative concept, which will feature some of Cambridgeshire’s famous landmarks, to PR and advertising campaigns – including the two prominent billboard sites.

In addition to the two billboards, the campaign will run in the local press around Cambridge. The brand evolution is to mark the changes in the property sales and letting sector and reflect TuckerGardner’s ethos of today. Robin Bryant, Managing Director of Mobas has said that the creative idea for the campaign has come from research into the general public’s opinions and their views of not just the company TuckerGardner, but of estate agents as a whole.

If your company is looking to reposition themselves in the market and you want to make a big statement to broadcast the message, billboards provide the perfect platform. There are printing companies local to the area who will offer poster printing in Cambridge.

A new print firm in Cambridge is capitalising on the beauty of the area by offering poster printing in Cambridge of some of the city’s more famed images.

The new Cambridge printing company is called Works in Print and they’re making a name for themselves by offering prints of some Cambridge’s most famous and iconic landmarks. Works in Print is offering images of the famous King’s College, scenes of people punting on the river and images of the King’s Parade.

Works in Print is currently asking its customers and the local people of Cambridge to choose their favourite image of the city. Patrick McCrae, one of the directors of Works in Print, explains:

“Among the works we offer are Cambridge scenes and we’d like to know what scenes people would like to see. You automatically think of King’s College and the punts on the river but there may be some hidden gems.”

The main objective of Works in Print is to offer poster printing in Cambridge to businesses who wish to decorate their offices with beautiful works of art. Works in Print makes these otherwise expensive works of art more affordable.

Created by Don and Patrick McCrae, a father and son team, Works in Print uses digital imaging technologies to create its fabulous printed artwork. The best part about the prints offered by Works in Print is that businesses can subscribe to their services, so that the prints displayed in their offices can be exchanged every six months.

There are many printing companies in Cambridge who are now involved with digital print technology, for example, brochure printing firms or stationery printers. There is a digital finishing exhibition taking place in March which should be of interest to Cambridge printing companies.

The exhibition is organised by Duplo International and will take place at Xerox supplier First Copy’s site in the city on 9-10 March. It follows on from Duplo’s London Calling and Digital North events.

There will be a variety of machines exhibited, including the Xerox 700 press, the Duplo Digital System 2000 bookletmaker, the DC-615Pro Multi Finisher and the DC-445 DuCreaser.

There will be specialists on hand. Print-On-Demand Solutions Group and e-commerce supplier Red Tie will be there to demonstrate and answer attendee’s questions. Mr. Peter Jolly, marketing manager at Duplo, said:

“Printers are beginning to realise that the unfinished printed sheet is worth pennies, but the finished product is worth pounds. It is companies such as First Copy, who embrace the need to provide customers with a total solution that includes print finishing not just a single print engine, who will come out of this difficult time stronger.”

The organiser’s last two exhibitions, which took place in Warrington and London, were very successful. Doplo say that interest in digital finishing solutions is on the increase and they are experiencing more requests for ‘end to end’ solutions.

The exhibition should prove to be very interesting for printing companies in and around Cambridge.

Printing companies around Cambridge will be seeking new sustainable markets, as business rides out the recession. This will be true for smaller firms offering business card printing in Cambridge, and other forms of stationery printing, right the way through to large volume litho printers.

Manufacturers of printing machinery may provide the clues as to the shape of print markets, post recession. Major offset press manufacturers KBA, Manroland and Heidelberg would appear to be looking at diversification away from their core offset presses business. For example, in December 2009 Manroland was granted its 709th patent for an “inkjet printing apparatus”. This generated some speculation that the manufacturer was about to move into the digital wide-format market. It would appear that Heidelberg is also looking to diversify, after it was reported that they were actively seeking a partner for a digital print operation.

Whilst this could indicate the start of an interesting trend there will be some concern that major offset litho manufacturers will ‘take their eye off’ their core businesses.

In recent years developments to save time and money in the sheetfed sector have concentrated on improved automation systems. This may indicate the way forwards, i.e. additions to core offset litho but not total abandonment of the long established methods. It will be interesting to observe the movement in digital applications in the near future. Clearly, longstanding players will not want to miss out on new markets in the future and we could reasonably expect some movement to digital innovations.

Last year a Cambridge printing company, Burlington Press, went into administration and was acquired by another Cambridge based print firm, Bluepoint Cambridge.

Administrators, Tenon Recovery, were called in to oversee the administration. Tenon’s case administrator, James Prior, said:

“We are trading the business with a view to selling it as a going concern. We are hoping to reach a conclusion in the next week, but there have been a number of expressions of interest.”

The administrators negotiated with several interested parties. After much speculation the company was eventually bought by Mr. Jim Gilmore, the owner of Bluepoint Cambridge. Mr. Gilmore had also acquired another Cambridge printing firm, Call Printers, about six months earlier.

Bluepoint Cambridge Ltd (BPC) now consists of five companies each specialising in its own aspect of visual communication. The company offers services for graphic design, advertising, personalised digital printing and large format exhibition graphics. They believe they are ideally located to service East Anglia, the South East and London. They serve a range of clients from different sectors, including Education, Pharmaceuticals, Automotive, Travel, Finance, Charity, and Heritage.

In these hard economic times companies which are able to offer a complete service are probably better placed to compete for contracts than those which offer only some aspects of customer’s requirements. It is always unfortunate and regrettable that jobs are lost when a company goes into administration. However, companies who survive and grow will, in turn, be able to offer more job opportunities in the future.

There is an exhibition at Cambridge Book and Print Gallery which is open until 23rd December at their premises in Newham Road CB3 9EY.

Cambridge Book and Print specialise in works on paper by renowned artists. As well as offering quality drawings and watercolours there is also a range of original prints by British and American artists and signed rare books on offer.

The gallery and bookseller is a completely independent business who has acquired a reputation for providing quality pieces.

The gallery has supplied works to many prestigious clients worldwide. Works have gone to private and institutional collections. If you are looking for something which has a particular meaning in the subject matter, they offer a totally personal service and are more than happy to discuss your requirements. They can make suggestions to suite your budget. You may have something of value at your own print company; why not bring it along for a valuation.

Here’s an example of the kind of work on offer. A limited edition print run of just 100, signed by the artist, of The Old Vic Theatre in London. The original work is owned by Kevin Spacey, well known Hollywood actor and artistic director of The Old Vic Theatre. 12 of the prints are more special, they have also been signed by Mr. Spacey.

If you are such a printing company in Cambridge why not take a look.
