The Lothian’s Police force will be enlisting businesses who offer poster printing in Leith or other areas across Edinburgh and the Lothians to produce promotional material featuring their beat officers. This latest use of printing companies is part of a scheme to demonstrate the force’s commitment to the community. Officers will have their photographs displayed on posters around town halls, libraries and community centres across the Lothians to try to aid residents in the area to identify with the police officers working in their area and make them more approachable to the public. This is part of the police force’s “community commitment” which will also involve surgeries around the area for residents to come and air their views and discuss face to face with community officers.

Having a higher profile in the area was felt to be important by the police force to show their commitment to policing the area despite fears in the current climate of budget cuts. The Chief Constable, David Strang, acknowledged that the force did face redundancies and cuts over the next few years but said that, with this scheme, they hoped to work more closely with residents to identify what their priorities and concerns were in terms of policing in their area. The force has also put together an agenda that makes the community ‘11 promises’, one of which includes the response times to emergency calls with pledges to answer those within 10 minutes in the capital and 20 minutes in other areas across the Lothians.

City centre bus shelter posters will be the locations booked to take advantage of the thousands of people who descend on the city around this time of year. The poster campaign will be backed up by a radio campaign on Real Radio and the campaign has been designed to promote general awareness of where the brand is stocked in Edinburgh. The radio campaign will run 40 second advertisements around the theme of ‘Crabbie’s Adventures’ directing locals from Leith and other areas around Edinburgh and all the visitors to the city to key bars in the area.

The posters will also communicate that strong Scottish roots that the brand has to visitors and locals. The John Crabbies distillery used to be located on 100 – 124 Great Junction Street in Leith. Branded street maps will also be printed and distributed to consumers who come into the city and this will map out which venues stock the drink alongside key landmarks in this historic city. The job for the marketing campaign is a mix of driving awareness of the brand heritage and driving footfall to local venues. This latest campaign comes on the back of a series of summer campaigns that the brand has run including sponsorship of the Scottish Open which was held at Loch Lomond.

Outdoor advertising posters are being using to promote the city of Edinburgh, as well as Leith, and encourage new visitors to the Scottish capital, perceived as a cultural and historic city. Posters will be used to now position the city of Edinburgh as a happening place with much to attract those looking for a cosmopolitan city to visit.

The posters will feature different residents of Edinburgh to depict the wide and varied range of attractions to visit in the city, and market Edinburgh as a cool place for young, savvy visitors to come to. The campaign name ‘This is My Edinburgh’ demonstrates that the Destination Marketing Alliance Edinburgh wants to use real people to challenge people’s perceptions of the city and give them perhaps some insider tips on what else the city has to offer.

The posters will be displayed in key transport and commuter hot spots in other areas of the country to encourage those to travel north to Scotland. Posters will be seen in London’s Gatwick airport, Stansted airport, London’s Kings Cross Station and in the Metro Shopping Centre in Newcastle. Within the city itself, Edinburgh Waverley and Edinburgh airport will also display the creative posters to welcome visitors to the city and encourage them to explore the city’s music venues off the beaten track or rooftop galleries. A website will also be developed to give the insider knowledge on the best places to go.

Companies looking for poster printing in Leith or other areas of Edinburgh to help with their advertising requirements will be able to find companies in the area who will be able to provide a reliable and efficient service.

The advertiser is a supporter of the outdoor advertising industry, having run bus campaigns and billboard campaigns in the past, which can be an important source of income for print companies.

There had been rumours in London trade press that Scottish and Southern Energy might be looking at London creative agencies to work with on their advertising campaigns after calling for a pitch that included creative agencies from Scotland and London. The news that they have appointed The Leith as part of its roster is therefore good news for the agency but also the wider advertising industry across the area. As reported in The Drum magazine, Jonny Petrie, brand manager at the client said of the Leith agency:

“We’re excited to tap into their creative expertise”.

Scottish and Southern Energy is the UK’s second largest energy supplier and a major client for Scottish creative agencies. The client has worked with other Scottish agencies in the past for various marketing efforts across their different departments such as The Union, The Gate Worldwide and Story.

The Leith will work with Scottish and Southern Energy across advertising and community work. The client has previously ran large format billboard posters and large format vinyls across the side of buses with the transport media helping to fit with Scottish and Southern Energy’s greener credentials.

Creative agency, The Leith, has made it onto the shortlist for the ‘Best of Health Advertising’ – national awards that recognises the best in creative work in Healthcare.

There are 26 agencies that have been short listed in the Best of Health awards, which is organised by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising and the Leith based agency is one of them, with their entries included in amongst a total of 111 entries across 22 advertising categories. There had been 334 entries from 50 agencies in total submitted before the shortlist. The shortlist covers campaigns across press, online, direct mail and poster printing.

The IPA Best of Health awards is a well respected creative awards ceremony for media communications aimed at healthcare professionals or messages to consumers about healthcare. The team judging the work are led by top healthcare creatives and they recognise that healthcare advertising can save lives and it is therefore important to recognise that engaging with people with these messages requires a great deal of creativity from agencies.

In last year’s awards, Mother Advertising was given ‘Best of Show’ for their campaign for Frank, the Government’s anti-drug helpline and website which ran across mixed media. Entries will be judged from press, outdoor, TV, online and mixed media campaigns and the awards will take place on the 24th June 2010.

For businesses in the Leith area who are looking for creative and media campaigns, there are agencies in the area that can help, and also print companies in Leith who can offer poster, direct mail and leaflet printing.

One recent example of a woman who successfully used Leith poster printing was when 42 year old Jackie Bruce needed to find her lost dog.

Jackie left her Labrador outside a supermarket in Leith while she was shopping – but when she came out the dog had vanished. The dog, named Bess, had been left tied to a lamppost outside of the supermarket while she was inside with her son.

Thankfully, the dog hadn’t been dog napped, nor had she ran away, she had been ‘rescued’ by a dog lover who thought the dog had been abandoned and didn’t want her to be taken by a dog warden.

Mrs Bruce quickly acted by using poster printing in Leith to plaster the local areas with notices about her missing dog – posters which did the trick when a friend of Lucas Franek, the man who rescued the dog, saw them and notified him of the dog owners’ search for their pet.

Lucas Franek then contacted Mrs Bruce about her dog. Mrs Bruce commented:

There are still a significant number of people employed in the printing industry in Scotland. But would current employees in, for example, a brochure printing firm in Leith or a litho print company in the middle of Edinburgh, know about the importance of the print and publishing industry to 20th-century Scottish economic, social and cultural development.

About ten years ago three people, David Finkelstein, Sarah Bromage, and Alisair McCleery were involved in an initiative, with collaborative partners Napier University and Queen Margaret University College. The aim of the initiative was to document the history of the Scottish printing industry in the 20th century. The Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE), was a aural history project which was undertaken with a number of other Scottish organizations to create an archive on the Social and economic importance of the printing and publishing industry. A SAPPHIRE spokesperson said:

“It’s important that we remember the past is not just dry facts and statistics but also the detailed lives of real people. SAPPHIRE aims to give a voice to these lives.”

One interesting fact alone is that in the 1960’s the Scottish Printing industry employed between 5,000 and 7,000 people. There have been many market forces since that have reshaped the industry into its present form. There must be many people in the industry that would enjoy having a closer look at the movements which occurred in the Scottish print industry during the 20th century. Interested parties can find SAPPHIE in the Edward Clark Collection at Napier University, and exhibitions and publications on the history of the printing and publishing industry.

It’s interesting to think how printing started in Scotland when you next order your POS printing in Leith.

If you require stationery printers in Leith you should not have much trouble in finding a suitable local print company to suit your needs. There is a choice of print firms in and around the region. Some are bigger firms, handling large production print runs and others are smaller family run businesses offering that personal touch.

For example, local print firm Leith Print & Copy is one of the print companies which could provide all of your printing requirements. They offer digital and graphic printing and can handle anything from business card and stationery printing in Leith, to digital and graphic printing and laminating. The printing company says that digital printing has become the more popular choice for customers today, with digital files being easily transferable via computer direct to press. They also point out that they have the right equipment to deliver a quality result and praise their team of skilled people.

You may require printing which has to withstand a lot of handling, for example teaching materials for schools, laminating the print will extend its life for a very long time. Lamination is a process where the sheet surfaces are sandwiched between two protective plastic films. The edges are then heat sealed to complete the full encapsulation. The printed piece is permanently protected from smudging, fading, fingerprints and other contaminates, giving it great durability.

Whatever your print need is it should be a relatively easy task to find a printing firm around Leith which will be right for you.

The city council announced in December 2009 that they were looking to build a spectacular London Eye-style Ferris wheel on Leith’s waterfront.

There has been a mixed reaction from local residents but business experts feel that the attraction is exactly what Leith needs. They believe that a spectacular focal point such as this will attract increased tourism and encourage more companies to set up in the waterfront area. The proposal has led to a ‘surge of optimism for the future of the area’, they said.

The city council is negotiating with the builders of the Singapore Flyer, which is the biggest wheel in the world. They are looking to build something very similar on the waterfront. It was reported that confidence is running high that the project will go ahead. Further development will also include a new ferry crossing, shops, offices, hotels, business space and nine urban villages, providing thousands of new homes. Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce believes the attraction would encourage more developers to invest in the area.

Spokesman Graham Bell said:

“There is certainly potential for a big ticket item like this to act as a catalyst for other developments. A giant Ferris wheel would bring the place to life. Businesses would open up as a result and it would become a place where people would want to be. The wheel could really help generate a buzz in Leith.”

This could be just the place to set up a new printing company in Leith.

Earlier in the year Scottish print management firm SBP Creative Solutions (formerly known as Stress Buster Solutions) became a much larger company. They can now offer whole solutions for printing work after acquiring two other companies. SBP paid an undisclosed sum for Minds Eye Creative, a design firm, and Applecroft Print Management.

The company are now in a position to offer a much wider service to their clients. According to director Mike Hislop, this is the result of the greater buying power the expanded company now has. The new acquisitions have improved the whole operation. The print company now offers enhanced print management services, graphic design, press production, web design, creative artwork and emarketing. Mr. Hislop said:

We have worked very hard over the last four years and we felt the time was right for us to look at expanding our core business in line with the demands of our clients. We have been doing quite well over the past year, despite the downturn, and have moved to Applecroft’s larger offices in Leith, as well as retaining Minds Eye’s office in Fife.

The purchase of the Edinburgh based Applecroft PM brought in new clients for SBP, including BP, Ryanair and Globespan. Other printing companies in Leith may well be inspired by such an expansion story, in such hard times. Clearly the circumstances and time were right for this company. Printers in Leith will look for the upturn in 2010. No doubt there will be others looking to make expansive moves in the coming months. As usual, it all depends on funding, quality acquisitions and timing. The latter probably being the most crucial.
